Simple French Toast Recipe

I love eating sweet foods for breakfast and in my house, French toast is a favorite. Eggy, sweet, shallow fried bread...what's not to love?

There are so many fancy ways to make French toast. Many recipes use thick slices of brioche bread and stuff or top the French toast with chocolate, peanut butter, nuts or fruits.

My recipe is super easy and calls for white sandwich bread. We like it with butter and a generous pour of pancake syrup.

Occasionally, I like eating breakfast food for dinner and on those days a plate of warm, syrupy French toast with a glass of cold milk, really hits the spot ðŸ˜‹

SERVES

TOTAL TIME

15 Minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • 3/4 cup full fat milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder (optional)

  • 6 slices bread

  • A pinch of salt

  • 1 stick of butter

  • Cooking oil

METHOD

  1. In a pie plate, beat the eggs, milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon powder (optional) and salt.

  2. Dip a slice of bread into the eggy mixture flipping a couple times.

  3. Heat a frypan with a pat of butter and a teaspoon of oil.

  4. Place the soaked bread in the pan, cover and cook a few minutes.

  5. Flip, cover and cook for a few more minutes until puffed up and brown.

  6. Add more butter and oil after each batch.

Tips and Bits

Keep heat low any time you are cooking with butter as butter burns quickly. Add a little oil to the butter to prevent it from burning.

I like to wipe my frypan after each batch to clean away the browned butter.

I like to cover my frypan because it keeps the bread fluffy and cooks it all the way through.

Make extra slices to keep in the fridge for a day or in the freezer for longer. Reheat in the microwave or toaster.
